The L.U.C 1860 Revolution Edition Lucent Steel with untreated gold dial is our take on one of the most important dress watches of modern times, the 1860. First released in 1997, the 1860 served as the launching point for Chopard's L.U.C collection — which saw the brand step onto the stage as a top-tier watchmaker. Last year, Chopard celebrated this model with an updated version in Lucent Steel, which refined the details but took away none of the good stuff. The Revolution version follows in these footsteps, with a perfectly sized 36.5mm case in recycled Lucent Steel, powered by the 96.40-L, which is very similar to the original Calibre 1.96, except with added hacking seconds and without a date display. The dial is, frankly, superb. It's made by Metalem, and is pure, untreated gold. This rich, refined material is perfectly contrasted with with the bright, stark Lucent Steel of the polished bezel, resulting in a watch that is fulll of both dynamism and old-world charm.

Deliveries will be in batches, from mid-February to mid-April.

Dial Of Your Dreams

Not only is this untreated, solid gold dial absolutely glorious, it's got serious pedigree too. It's made by Metalem, the same manufacturer of the original 1860 dials, only this time around, Chopard owns the facility. It's also the facility that Philippe Dufour selected when he needed dials produced for the Simplicity.

Steel, But Make It Sustainable

Chopard has long led the way when it comes to the integration of ethical materials, and steel is no different. Lucent Steel was debuted in the Alpine Eagle, and in addition to being recycled, it offers several material benefits. It's 50% harder than other steels and has a bright, luminous quality. Added to the perfect proportions of the 1860 case, it looks as precious as gold.

Finishing Touches

The dial's colour is perfectly matched by the tapered 18mm calfskin grain leather strap with contrasting stitching. The strap is entirely in keeping with this watch's personality-down-to-earth but absolutely exceptional.

A Pioneering Calibre

Visible through the back of this 36.5mm case is the Calibre 96.40-L, the latest version of one of the legendary Calibre 1.96. Not only did this movement feature the world's first bi-directional micro-rotor, but the stacked power barrels gave it an impressive 65-plus hours of power reserve. This version adds hacking seconds into the mix, and does away with the date, allowing for an even cleaner dial.
